Why does this calculator display my BMI above my protein intake?
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is directly linked to whether protein recommendations should be based on your total scale weight or your estimated lean body mass. For individuals within normal BMI ranges (18.5–24.9), total body weight is an excellent benchmark. For individuals with obesity (BMI ≥ 30), calculating protein purely from total body weight can overestimate protein needs, so monitoring your BMI alongside protein intake ensures accurate, safe nutrition planning.
How much protein do I need to build muscle (hypertrophy)?
Extensive sports nutrition meta-analyses (including Morton et al. and the ISSN) show that 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (approximately 0.73 to 1.0 grams per pound) maximizes muscle protein synthesis (MPS). Consuming more than 2.2 g/kg does not produce faster muscle growth for natural athletes, though it can aid satiety.
Why is protein higher during fat loss (cutting)?
When in a caloric deficit, your body is in an energy shortfall and is more prone to catabolizing skeletal muscle tissue for fuel. Increasing protein intake to 2.0–2.4 g/kg preserves lean muscle mass, boosts diet-induced thermogenesis, and suppresses hunger hormones like ghrelin.
Does protein timing and per-meal distribution matter?
